Where Wyvenhoe sails

Now based at Hythe Quay, Maldon on the River Blackwater in Essex, Wyvenhoe sails on the Thames Estuary including the other rivers of Essex, Suffolk, and Kent. She often sails up the Thames and can be chartered in London.

In Essex our home river, the Blackwater is a lovely river and a sail there can often be combined with a trip up the pretty River Colne. The hamlets of Rowhedge and Wivenhoe (where the barge was built) are great destinations when the tides allow because we can moor at the Quay and you can walk ashore enjoying lovely buildings, not to mention riverside pubs and eating houses.

Walton Backwaters is an archipelago of marshes and islands made famous by Arthur Ransome's book 'Secret Water' situated behind Walton on the Naze. It's a lovely place for isolated anchorages, bird watching and beach barbecues! It's great to explore in the barge boat too.

Harwich Harbour has not only close encounters with huge ferries and container ships but a super historic old town to visit. Sailing on up the River Stour we can reach Mistley Quay famous for its Victorian architecture and swans - real and stone! On the north shore Erwarton is a lovely anchorage where you can swim off the beach or walk up to the village and the Queen's Head pub.

However the beautiful Rivers Orwell, Deben and Ore are our favourite waters giving unmatched beauty and rural tranquility.

Aldeburgh is a truly wonderful destination, imortalised by the music of Benjamin Britten. From there a visit to the concerts at Snape Maltings is easy to arrange. On a long trip we may also be able to sail right up to Snape itself.

Further North lies the Victorian resort of Southwold with a sheltered harbour and a newly restored pier. We can get there on a long charter. In really good conditions the port of Lowestoft is the farthest of our possible destinations.

The River's Crouch and Roach lie behind Foulness island with its military bases but are isolated and great for birdwatching.

In Kent the old ports of Faversham and Whitstable and the peaceful River Swale are within our cruising grounds too. The River Medway features marshy creeks as well as a lot of industrial development. But at its head lies the old town of Rochester and we can visit the naval dockyards at Chatham, recently restored and containing a Museum.

Between all these rivers and ports the feeling of wide open sea and sky is soon experienced leaving behind all the worries, traffic and problems of your work and everyday life.
